New Year, New Beginnings: New year’s resolutions in creativity

“Maybe this position is not for me,” I said, looking into the face of a very disgruntled boss and not wanting to say “I want to quit” directly.

“I don’t think that’s true,” she replied. And they proceeded to discuss ongoing projects and approaches in the workplace.

Still, I could not get it off my mind. What if this entire year of change after change, roadblock after roadblock in my multiple places of work, were just a sign that I needed to take a step back and pour my heart into MY work – the work of being an artist. In my heart of hearts, I knew I would not be at peace with myself if I didn’t.

Uncoincidentally, it felt as though the Lord was persistently disrupting my sources of comfort within my full-time jobs, despite the financial security. Turns out, He was faithfully and gently nudging me to take the leap and trust Him to provide. I needed to take the next step to steward well the gift He gave me, and do what He has put in my heart to do.

In my heart of hearts, I knew I would not be at peace in myself if I didn’t.

So I quit my job to pursue art.

Well…this is scary!

Nevertheless, in this new year, I have a few resolutions on my heart:

  1. To better invest myself in the relationships and community I have been given.

  2. To create every day.

  3. To rebuild a healthy and sustainable lifestyle.

  4. To work toward a thriving prayer life.

  5. To take a leap of faith and give the full-time artist thing a go, trusting God to provide.

Will I fail? Of course. I’ve done it too many times to count. It’s best for one’s mental health to expect it, am I right?

But thank God, in Jesus the new year is not the only time for new beginnings. It’s every day and moment. So we claim grace, pick ourselves up, take a deep breath, and keep going.

Therefore, if anyone is in Christ, he is a new creation; old things have passed away; behold, all things have become new.
— 2 Corinthians 5:17

I hope this encourages you, too!

Love always,

Ruth
