Meet the Artist
“It took me four years to paint like Raphael, but a lifetime to paint like a child.”
- Pablo Picasso
Ruth Scego, Mixed Media Artist & Writer
My work begins with a pursuit of wholeness—the way things were originally designed to live in harmony. I’m captivated by the places where nature, humanity, and creative purpose intersect, especially when those relationships have been strained or forgotten. The ocean, with all its ecosystems, mysteries, cultures, and histories, becomes both a backdrop and a teacher. Through nautical themes, mixed media, and unconventional materials, I explore what stewardship, restoration, and human flourishing might look like in our modern world.
I often work with wood and retired saw blades—materials that represent the meeting point between the natural world and the built world. They carry the tension between industry and environment, progress and preservation—and they also hold hope. To me, they symbolize that restoration is always possible, even in places we’ve written off. My art aims to make space for that tension and remind us of that hope.
I see “conservation” not just as ecological intervention, but as a stewardship and a way of life—a worldview of sustainability, care, and generosity. Stewardship extends beyond endangered species; it includes cultures, communities, and the dignity of every person. I believe we were intentionally created in the image of a creative God, and when we live from that design—using our gifts, caring for what’s entrusted to us, exploring with curiosity—we experience life more fully. My art is a celebration of that truth: that imagination, innovation, and restoration can be acts of worship.
Writing is woven into many of my pieces. I’ve journaled for years, and the practice of processing stories, ideas, and experiences—especially those gathered from the water—naturally found its way into my visual work. Layering words beneath paint, wood, and metal creates a sort of dialogue between reflection and creation, between what is seen and what is felt.
Through my work, I want to invite people to step outside compartmentalized, hurried living and re-enter a posture of wonder. I hope the pieces serve as quiet reminders to look deeper, live fuller, and care better—for the ocean, for one another, and for the world we’ve been entrusted with. If we’re willing to listen, even the simplest materials can tell a story, just as the most familiar things in nature can—about the character of the God who created all of it.
About the Artist
Ruth’s artist journey began as soon as she could hold a pencil. Born and raised in Southeast Texas, she is entirely self-taught, with nature and her walk with God as her greatest teachers. Now based in Bryan, Texas, she operates her studio while spending time on the water in Galveston and gaining sailing experience. Her work is deeply informed by hands-on exploration—whether journaling from the shoreline, studying maritime history, or learning directly from coastal ecosystems and the cultures connected to them. Drawing from mixed media practices, marine life, and themes of stewardship and restoration, Ruth is developing an expanding body of work that bridges environmental curiosity, theological reflection, and a lived desire to see people and places nurtured back toward harmony and relationship with the Creator.
