The Weight of Little Wins
Let’s be honest—if the goal were to grow as fast as possible, hitting milestone after milestone, we’d probably burn out before we even got anywhere. Sure, rapid success sounds great in theory, but at what cost? If we’re constantly chasing the next big thing, we miss the magic of the small things—the quiet wins, the unexpected lessons, the moments that shape us into artists (and humans) with depth, resilience, and actual joy in what we do.
Besides, if we build an audience purely on the rush of big moments, we attract people who are only there for the highs. But what about the in-betweens? The messy middle? The real, everyday journey? I’d rather build something that lasts—something with genuine community and meaning—not just a fleeting moment of applause.
For me, that means being a lifelong learner and actually noticing the little things. But let’s be honest: slowing down in a culture that worships speed and overnight success can feel like trying to paddle upstream with a spoon. That’s why remembering why we do what we do is everything. If I’m chasing the approval of the majority, discouragement is inevitable. But if I create for the joy of the process, for my own growth, and ultimately for the Lord, then even the smallest steps forward become victories - and at that point even the mistakes just make you laugh!
Lately, this has shifted how I approach my art. Instead of obsessing over how far I have to go, I’m challenging myself to focus on right now. One project at a time. One small risk at a time. Daring to experiment with new mediums and techniques instead of playing it safe. You know that whole thing about building a foundation before you build that house? Recently for me, this has meant everything from practicing my basic drawing skills, to doodling fun facts about nature in my art journal, to investing in the little community with which I have been blessed. It’s wild how shifting your perspective can shift your courage.
So here’s my challenge for you: Whatever you’re working toward, forget the finish line for a day, and enjoy the mini projects, micro-steps, and little victories. Notice them. Journal about them. Learn from them. Pray about them. Let them make you smile.
And on that note, stay tuned to see some of my latest creative experiments (mistakes and all). Let’s embrace the journey together.
With courage and creativity,
Ruth
